PROSECUTOR’S TRAFFIC TIP OF THE DECADE
February 23, 2016

A recent interstate traffic crash fatality brought to mind an informal review of the causes of such crashes made by a former Ohio State Patrol officer years ago. I think is still relevant and worth repeating today. He observed that crashes on interstate multi-lane highways often take place in the high speed lanes late at night and especially on weekends beginning Friday nights. He reasoned that drunk drivers who likely are the ones driving the wrong way on interstate highways hug what they believe to be the right-hand slow lane which is actually the high speed lane for the correct direction of travel. This results in severe high speed collisions from unsuspecting drivers traveling correctly in the high speed lane. His simple recommendation is to use the middle lane for late night interstate driving with added alertness on weekends.
