61-year old West Chester Woman Convicted of Obstructing Official Business
April 04, 2009

The Butler County Prosecutor announced today the successful prosecution of Maria Roy. Defendant Roy, a 61-year old West Chester woman was convicted of Obstructing Official Business only after 15 minutes of jury deliberation.

On October 31, 2008, West Chester Police Officers were responding to a fight call on the Skinner property in West Chester where Defendant Roy resided. Upon arrival the officers found several individuals injured and underage drinking. Defendant Roy approached the officers and told them to leave. When she refused to comply with the officers, she was being handcuffed when a struggle ensued. As a result of the struggle, a West Chester Officers and Defendant Roy fell to the ground and both were injured.

“People should know not to interfere with the police when they are trying to respond to a call. Situations are often confusing without bystanders interjecting themselves into the situation and making it more dangerous. This 61-year old woman should know better than to physically intervene in a lawful investigation. We are glad no one was hurt and also thankful the jury saw through the defendant’s ridiculous story that she was attacked by the police.” Prosecutor Piper stated.
