Tom Burer Pleads Guilty to Campaign Fraud
September 08, 2011

Tom Burer, former chief of Universal Transportation Systems in Fairfield, plead guilty on Tuesday to attempted tampering with a campaign finance report in a case connected to the resignation of Fairfield board member Sharon Ko. A complaint was also filed with the Ohio Elections Commission, stating that Burer funneled monies through third parties into a political action committee in order to conceal the source of his contributions.

According to the complaint, after Fairfield school board member Arnold Engle, an advocate for advertising for bids for the school district bussing contract, opposed signing a three-year contract with Burer Garage, LLC in 2009, Tom Burer chose a candidate to support in targeting Engle for defeat. A campaign political action committee, Moms On A Mission (“MOMs”) became an active supporter of Sharon Ko. Sharon Ko was a knowing recipient of several indirect contributions and acknowledged she eventually knew the money was coming from Tom Burer.

“This case stands as a lesson and a warning to anyone seeking public office that election laws must be followed,” Gmoser said. “Butler County has the time, the ability and the resources to follow the money and get to the truth.”
