Press Release For Immediate Release May 3, 2007

(Hamilton, OH) Deborah J. Gibson was found guilty by a Butler County jury today of Involuntary Manslaughter, a first degree felony and Permitting Drug Abuse, a fifth degree felony. The jury deliberated 5 hours before finding the 50-year-old Liberty Township woman guilty as charged.

Gibson, along with her husband, Kenneth Gibson, provided liquid oxycodone and liquid morphine on multiple occasions to their 16-year-old grandson, David VanCleve. According to the Butler County Coroner’s Office, VanCleve’s death on August 2, 2006, was due to the extraordinary high levels of the powerful pain medications. Kenneth Gibson previously pled guilty to two counts of Corrupting Another With Drugs and Involuntary Manslaughter in January 2007.

Prosecutor Robin Piper stated, “This ‘grandmother’ has been extremely deceptive in a cold and callous way. She’s plotted to thwart the truth and we are extremely grateful to the jury for not allowing themselves to be misled. How on earth can any adult justify administering hardcore narcotics to a teenager - its beyond comprehension.”

Butler County Common Pleas Judge Nastoff, revoked the defendant’s bond, order a pre-sentence investigation and a forensic evaluation.

Prosecutor Piper concluded by saying, “This has been another excellent investigation from the Sheriff’s Office providing the Courts with the evidence needed for an important conviction. It was very appropriate for the court to order a psychological evaluation prior to sentencing.”

Sentencing for Deborah Gibson is scheduled July 13, 2007 at 8:30AM, before the Honorable Judge Andrew Nastoff.
