Customer Catches Crook
August 17, 2007

Press Release For Immediate Release August 16, 2007

(HAMILTON, OH) A Butler County jury returned a verdict of guilty of Robbery today against a 26-year-old Middletown man. The jury deliberated for 90 minutes before convicting Michael Gammoh of Robbery, a second degree felony.

On May 2, 2007, Defendant Gammoh entered the Discount Verity Smokes and Carryout, located at 2233 North Verity Parkway in Middletown. After a brief conversation with the store clerk, the defendant reached into the register and grabbed a handful of money. When the store clerk attempted to stop the defendant, he struck the clerk in the face and fled , but was tackled by a customer and held until off-duty Middletown Police Officer Ryan Morgan, who was in the area, responded to the shop, and took the defendant into custody.

Prosecutor Piper stated, “Its gratifying to see a customer - an ordinary citizen - tackle a fleeing robber and hold them for the police! Its an example of someone stepping up to the plate when their assistance was needed. Law enforcement can often times only solve crimes as long as citizens are willing to help out. Grabbing a handful of money is not worth whatever sentence he gets. We are grateful to the jury, the off-duty police office, store clerk and the customer who are all ordinary people, but when acting in concert, took a criminal off the streets.”

Defendant Gammoh faces up to 8 years in prison when he is sentenced on September 19, 2007 at 8:30 am before the Honorable Craig Hedric. Defendant’s priors include, Failure to Comply with an Order or Signal of a Police Officer, Misuse of Credit Cards, Domestic Violence, Assault, and Violation of a Protection Order.
