Press Release For Immediate Release June 5, 2008

(Hamilton, Ohio) The Butler County Prosecutor announced today the successful prosecution of an illegal immigrant involved in a violent crime. Carlos Lopez Rodriguez was sentenced to prison for 3 years after a jury found him guilty of 2 counts of Abduction and Domestic Violence.

On February 3, 2008, Maria Gonzalez arrived home and attempted to leave her boyfriend Carlos Rodriguez. She went to the basement to finish laundry and the Defendant confronted her about leaving. When she tried to leave, he wrapped his belt around her and threw her to the ground. The Defendant only stopped when Maria’s 6 year old child knocked on the door. The Defendant let her walk upstairs, but when she asked her friend to call the police, the Defendant pulled a knife and held them in the house against their will.

After a day and a half of trial filled with 3 Spanish interpreters, including one for the 6 year old child, the jury deliberated 3 ½ hours and found the Defendant guilt of 2 counts of Abduction and Domestic Violence.

Judge Sage immediately sentenced the Defendant to 3 years in prison. Once the Defendant is completed serving his 3 year sentence, the Defendant will be deported back to Mexico.

Prosecutor Piper stated, “The most insidious types of domestic violence are those that involve the presence of children. Studies have shown that many who commit domestic violence learn the behavior when they were children. It perpetuates itself and the cycle needs to be broken. We don’t like seeing people go to prison, but you can’t beat up on women and you can’t expose young children to violence.”
